US House of Representatives: Republican Jim Jordan fails for the third time to allow Ukrainian troops to cross the Dnipro River

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., nominates Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as speaker as Republicans seek to elect Jordan, a key ally of Donald Trump, as the next speaker of the House of Representatives. ..

Republican Jim Jordan also failed in his third attempt to be elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Due to dissenting votes from his own group, the confidant of former US President Donald Trump once again failed to obtain the necessary majority in the vote on Friday.

The 59-year-old had already failed to obtain the required number of votes in the parliamentary chamber in two previous voting rounds this week.

Jordan received 194 votes from his group in Friday’s vote and 25 party members voted against him. This means that he lost more votes compared to the previous votes. The Republicans only have a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

The faction currently has 221 seats in the parliamentary chamber, the Democrats have 212 seats – not all MPs were present at the vote. Right-wing hardliner Jordan can afford very few dissenters due to his party’s narrow majority. He cannot count on support from the Democratic ranks.

In recent days, Jordan had tried to bring internal party opponents to his side. Some reported feeling threatened and pressured by Jordan’s supporters. It is unclear whether he will be able to win over enough skeptics from his own ranks. Another Republican caucus meeting was scheduled for Friday. Until a new president is elected, legislative work in Congress is largely at a standstill. (sda/dpa)
