A supporter of former American President Donald Trump (77) wants to cooperate with the Public Prosecution Service in an election fraud case in the state of Georgia against Trump, among others. Lawyer Sidney Powell (68) pleaded guilty in court on Thursday to various criminal offenses, including involvement in a conspiracy to commit election fraud.
American media unanimously reported that the court in Atlanta had ordered Powell to receive a suspended sentence of six years and to pay a fine of several thousand dollars. She would also have to write a letter of apology to the citizens of Georgia and testify “truthfully” about the case in future proceedings against other defendants.
She was Trump’s staunch supporter
Powell is the second person, after a less prominent defendant, to make a deal with prosecutors in the case to avoid a trial and possible prison time. Her turnaround is surprising and meaningful. Powell was considered a staunch supporter of Trump and was said to have been involved in several important conversations. Their insights could be useful to prosecutors in their prosecution of Trump.
In Georgia, Trump was charged along with eighteen other defendants – including Powell – over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state. The ex-president was also charged at the federal level in a separate proceeding for his influence on the 2020 election.
Trump lost the election to Democrat Joe Biden, also in Georgia. But to this day he refuses to admit defeat. Instead, Trump claims he was robbed of a victory by massive voter fraud. After the 2020 election, the Republican then tried to change the election results in various ways – including by pressuring political leaders at the federal level and in states like Georgia. (SDA)
