It honors the Iranian women’s movement, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said in Strasbourg on Thursday. “Women. Life. Freedom,” Metsola wrote on the online service X, formerly Twitter, in reference to the slogan of the mass protests in Iran that broke out after Amini’s death.
“The brutal murder of Jina Mahsa Amini marks a turning point,” Metsola said. “He started a women’s movement that will go down in history,” she added. The slogan “Woman-Life-Freedom” has become a rallying cry “for all those who defend the equality, dignity and freedom of all people in Iran.”
22-year-old Amini died in September 2022 after her arrest by the Iranian moral police for wearing a headscarf that was too loose. According to her family, she died after being abused by the police, but the Iranian authorities deny this.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for December 13. For 35 years, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to individuals or organizations that promote human rights and freedom of expression. An amount of 50,000 euros has been allocated.
