Climate activist Elisa Bas caused outrage online. She said there was a “pogrom mood” against the Palestinians in Germany.

Elisa Bas (22) is spokesperson for the climate organization Fridays for Future. But she doesn’t just appear at climate demonstrations. As German media report, she is said to have recently taken part in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin. A short time later she disappeared from the scene. The activist is now offline on social media.

Bas previously expressed criticism on Instagram about the conflict in the Middle East. She refers to a quote from Josef Schuster, chairman of the Central Jewish Council. It says: “Something has to be done. The barbarians are among us.”

Bas shared the quote, noting: “There is a pogrom mood against the Palestinians in Germany, and Schuster is fueling it.” Pogrom refers to violence against national, religious or ethnic minorities.

Bas continued that silence would not help the oppressed, but rather protect the perpetrators: “It condones the oppression and allows it to happen. The genocide and the enforced silence about a genocide.” For example, the activist says that Israel would commit genocide – that is, genocide – against the Palestinians.

Israeli embassy fires back

The Israeli embassy in Germany has sharply criticized the activist’s statements. On The message makes it further clear: “The chairman of the Central Council of Jews wrote: ‘Whoever celebrates the bloodthirsty barbarity of Hamas terror in the German streets’ is a barbarian, not all Palestinians in Germany.”

The embassy also says that it is not the Palestinians who are resisting the pogrom sentiment, but rather the Jews. “The homes of Jews in Germany are marked with Stars of David and some of the barbarians described by Schuster want a Kristallnacht 2.0. against them,” the post said.

The embassy also rejects the accusation that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians. Because the Palestinian population has increased since 1948, “for that reason alone we cannot speak of a genocide.”

It is not the first time that the climate activist has caused irritation with her statements. During protests in Lützerath, which was evacuated due to lignite mining, Bas said: “As long as oppressive structures exist, it is normal to be marginalised. The abolition of white supremacy is therefore beneficial to everyone.” (Mrs)
