Arrested: Greta Thunberg was arrested on Tuesday.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, 20, was arrested on Tuesday during a protest on the sidelines of an oil and gas industry conference in London.

As a photographer from the AFP news agency reported, the 20-year-old was taken by two police officers and placed in the back seat of a police car. Several hundred demonstrators had previously blocked all entrances to the hotel where the Energy Intelligence Forum is taking place until Thursday.

As a participant in the protest, Thunberg criticized agreements between politicians and oil and gas industry representatives as “closed deals.” “Behind these closed doors, spineless politicians make deals and compromises with the lobbyists of the destructive fossil fuel industry,” she told reporters.

“Dreams are washed away”

The world is drowning in fossil fuels. “Our hopes, dreams and lives are being washed away by a flood of greenwashing and lies,” Thunberg added.

A number of market leaders were scheduled to speak at the conference on Tuesday, including Shell boss Wael Sawan (49), his counterpart at the French TotalEnergies Patrick Pouyanne (60) and the head of Saudi Aramco, Amin Nasser (65). . The protesters denounced that most of the industry’s profits would be funneled back into dirty energy, worsening climate change.

Thunberg is seen as the face of the global climate movement. As a 15-year-old, the Swede started sitting in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm during class on Friday and demonstrating for more effective climate protection measures.
