Will hardliner Jordan win the elections? US House of Representatives votes today on top position Dozens killed in shipwreck in Democratic Republic of Congo

FILE - Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, talks to reporters at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Oct. 8. 13, 2023. ...

After Republican Steve Scalise withdrew from his candidacy for speaker of the US House of Representatives, the House will vote on the new Republican candidate Jim Jordan on Tuesday. As Jordan told CNN, the vote will take place on Tuesday afternoon (6pm CEST). The Republicans chose the hardliner as the new candidate in the internal elections on Friday. However, former President Donald Trump’s confidant received only a narrow majority in the group’s vote. He was initially deemed unable to win a majority, but in recent days he has apparently attracted some opponents to his side. The Republicans only have a very small majority in the Chamber, and therefore a handful of dissenters are enough to block a candidacy.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., talks to reporters as he announces he is ending his campaign as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives following a Republican rally at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday,…

Previous House leader Kevin McCarthy was voted out of office in a historic vote earlier this month. To be elected to the third most important office in the state, after president and vice president, an absolute majority is required among the members of the House of Representatives present. This will probably require 217 votes in the parliamentary chamber.

Initially, the party had chosen right-wing conservative Steve Scalise as a possible successor, but because he did not receive the necessary majority, he withdrew his candidacy on Thursday evening. As long as the House has no leaders, observers say a vote on aid packages for the military conflicts in Ukraine and Israel is unlikely. (sda/dpa)
