Huitfeldt’s successor will be former Minister of Climate and Environment Espen Barth Eide. Huitfeldt has been Minister of Foreign Affairs since October 2021. The Social Democrat previously held various ministerial positions from 2008 to 2013 under then Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, now Secretary General of NATO.
Huitfeldt was criticized because her husband traded in a weapons company’s stock during her time in office. She was therefore accused of being biased when making gun purchase decisions. According to Prime Minister Støre, this was one of the reasons why Huitfeldt left her post.
At the same time as Huitfeldt’s resignation, a major restructuring of the Norwegian government took place. Among other things, the heads of the Ministries of Science and Fisheries were replaced. A new ministry was also established, the Ministry of Digitalization and Administration.
