The approximately 7,000 soldiers will be deployed nationwide on Monday and until further notice, radio station RTL reported on Saturday, citing the Elysée Palace. On Friday, an Islamist-radicalised young man killed a teacher with a knife and seriously injured three other people at a secondary school in Arras in northern France.
France imposed the highest terror alert level on Friday in light of the attack and the current situation in the Middle East. In particular, this allows the exceptional mobilization of resources and the dissemination of information that can protect citizens in a crisis situation.
Family members in police custody
The 20-year-old perpetrator is from Chechnya and is said to have shouted ‘God is great’ in Arabic during his attack. Police were able to neutralize the attacker with a Taser and arrest him. Several of the attacker’s relatives, including his sister, his mother, his uncle and two of his brothers, were also taken into custody, according to media reports.
As the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ reported with reference to the authorities, the attacker’s older brother was arrested in 2019 for preparing an attack on the French presidential palace and sentenced to prison as a member of a terrorist organization.
The attack took place almost three years after the fatal attack on history teacher Samuel Paty. The 47-year-old was killed by an attacker on October 16, 2020, in a Paris suburb and then beheaded. (sda/dpa)
