At least seven people were killed and several were seriously injured in an accident involving a suspected smuggling vehicle on Autobahn 94 in southern Germany.
The van, which was completely overcrowded with more than twenty people, left the road while trying to evade a police check, police in the state of Bavaria announced on Friday. The accident site is approximately 50 kilometers from the border with Austria.
At 6:50 am, German police reported seven deaths, but the situation was confusing. All occupants suffered at least minor injuries, some of them sustained serious injuries. They were taken to nearby hospitals.
There were also children in the car who were also injured, a police spokesperson said. The vehicle left the road near the Ampfing/Waldkraiburg intersection and then the serious accident occurred, police said.
The federal police had previously spotted the car on the A94. The driver then accelerated sharply and evaded control.
Numerous emergency services and the fire brigade were on site in the morning. The road to Munich was completely closed. The Public Prosecution Service has taken over the investigation into a possible murder. The portal “rosenheim24.de” first reported on the accident.
According to information from the German Federal Police and the Bavarian Border Police, the number of registered unauthorized entries has been increasing for months. Just a few days ago, a suspected smuggler fled from the federal police near Burghausen with four people in the car and caused an accident. Two were seriously injured. (saw/sda/dpa)
