An unauthorized pro-Palestinian demonstration escalated in Paris on Thursday evening.

Water cannons, tear gas and batons: a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Paris appears to be escalating on Thursday evening. Videos on social media show protesters running wild in Republic Square in eastern Paris and being surrounded by police. The demonstrators apparently spray-painted “Free Palestine” on the monument in the square.

The French government decided on Thursday afternoon to generally ban pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

There have been several escalations in recent days

Several demonstrations as part of the conflict in the Middle East have escalated in recent days. In Duisburg (D), several hundred police officers prevented clashes between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators. Two people who took part in the pro-Palestinian demonstration were taken into custody for making inflammatory statements.

Police also broke up a Palestinian demonstration in Berlin, sometimes with violence. In the Neukölln district, several people attacked a police car and one police officer was injured. Authorities believe the attackers were sympathizers of the radical Islamic group Hamas.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations are also taking place in Switzerland. A call for a demonstration on Friday is currently spreading on social media. This will take place from 5 p.m. at Barfüsserplatz in Basel. Under the motto ‘Stand up for Palestine’, the organizers call for ‘stop the genocide in Gaza’. The Basel-Stadt cantonal police are preparing accordingly. It is unclear whether demonstrations are planned in other Swiss cities on Friday. (An)
