He US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, insisted this Thursday on Tel Aviv that as long as his land exists, Israel will not have to defend itself.
“My message to Israel is that you may be strong enough to defend yourself, but as long as the United States exists, you will never have to. We will always be with you.”said Blinken in a joint media appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Blinken confirmed that 25 Americans have died in Israel in recent days.
The head of American diplomacy indicated that the Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza strip and which launched a land, sea and air attack against Israel last Saturday, did not commit these “cruel acts with the interests of the Palestinian people in mind”.
“There is no justification for such horrible acts”pointed out Blinken, who began his intervention by asserting that he came to Israel not only as the Secretary of State, but also as a Jew.
He emphasized that “Israel has the right and obligation to defend” and ensure that this does not happen again. Blinken said he spoke with Netanyahu about the importance of how Israel will achieve that goal.
“We, democracies, differ from terrorists in that we have different standards, even when it’s difficult, and in that we hold ourselves accountable.”he pointed out.
In this sense, he added, humanity and the value attached to human life and dignity is what makes democracy and makes it strong.
“That is why it is so important to take all possible precautions to avoid harming civilians and why we mourn the loss of every innocent life. Civilians of all faiths, of all nationalities died,” he said.
Netanyahuwho spoke in Hebrew and English, in the same speech before the media stated that Blinken’s visit “another tangible example of unequivocal US support for Israel.”
He stressed that “Hamas has proven itself to be the enemy of civilization” by massacring young people at an outdoor music festival and slaughtering entire families, among other things.
“President (Joe) Biden was right to call this ‘pure evil,'” said the prime minister, who equated Hamas with the Islamic State (IS) terror group and predicted the Palestinian organization would be “broken.” as happened with “daesh”.
Netanyahu added that “the first prerequisite for victory is moral clarity,” a concept he indicated Blinken mentioned during their meeting this Thursday.
The American stated in front of the media that “this is a moment of moral clarity”: “The vague condemnation of terrorism puts not only the people of Israel at risk, but people all over the world, look what just happened, individuals from 36 countries have died or are missing after these monstrous attacks,” he emphasized.
This Thursday, Blinken arrived in Tel Aviv, where, in addition to meeting with Netanyahu, he also met with his Israeli colleague Eli Cohen, with whom he also discussed American support for Israel internationally and cooperation in the war against Hamas.
This new war has caused more than 1,300 deaths in Israel and 3,200 injuries; while retaliatory airstrikes by the Israeli Air Force claimed at least 1,200 lives and left more than 6,000 injured in Gaza.
