The number of asylum applications in the 27 EU countries, but also in Switzerland and Norway, is expected to exceed one million this year. As the newspaper “Welt” reported based on the latest and previously unpublished figures from the EU asylum agency EUAA, more than 800,000 asylum applications have been submitted in these countries since the beginning of the year. The highest value since 2016 could be reached by the end of the year. At that time, 1.23 million applications were counted.
According to the EU Asylum Agency, the largest increases were recorded in Latvia with an increase of almost 170 percent and Estonia with almost 120 percent. This is mainly attributed to illegal migration from Belarus due to the war in Ukraine. According to figures from the Asylum Agency, Germany is in third place with 74 percent more applications than in the same period last year. (dpa)
