Athens dismisses judges and prosecutors for laziness and incompetence

Only recently were five lawyers fired, the newspaper “Naar Proto Thema” reported on Tuesday. The background is a huge number of unprocessed procedures, it said. The lawyers involved are responsible for the delays; they would have shined mainly through laziness, incompetence and absence.

The situation at the Supreme Administrative Court StE is particularly worrying – there are a large number of cases pending and decisions have been delayed up to 19 years in some cases. The Court of Auditors is also completely overloaded with 122,000 pending cases and is hopelessly behind schedule.

However, it is not only judges and prosecutors who are responsible for the poor state of the Greek courts. On the contrary, the system is completely outdated. For example, court officials report piles of files and sometimes even handwritten documents that have to be transported back and forth in shopping carts. There are now so many cases pending that numerous proceedings have been stopped due to prescription.
