Richard M. (48) wanted to kill his ex-girlfriend, but he killed the wrong woman.

Richard M.* and Fatima R.* were together for eight years. The 48-year-old became violent repeatedly until his girlfriend ended the relationship. But the man from Virginia couldn’t deal with that: last summer he went to his ex’s apartment. The door opened, M. stabbed her – and realized too late that it was not his ex-girlfriend who was standing in front of her.

Because in the apartment of his actual victim was a friend of R., Silvia A.* († 40). When she opened the door for her attacker, the mother of two children had no chance: “Richard M. was after the carotid artery, the face and the head. “He stabbed and punched where he could do the most damage,” the complaint said.

Perpetrator wants to cover up traces – and sets the corpse on fire

During the trial, the prosecution emphasized the severity of the injuries that led to the 40-year-old’s death. The body had numerous bruises and ten stitches. When the perpetrator realized that he had caught the wrong woman, he set fire to his already deceased victim. “He did this to cover up the gruesome murder and cover his tracks,” the prosecutor said.

According to his ex-girlfriend, the man had been violent before, NBC Washington reports. But she never thought he was capable of murder, she said. “Part of me feels guilty because he came for me and not for her. “She has to pay for something that should have happened to me,” she said.

On Thursday, Richard M. was found guilty of first-degree murder, Fox News reports. He faces life imprisonment, but the verdict will not be announced until January 2024. (gs)
