Zelensky calls for the fight against terror
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a joint fight against terror, given Russia’s war of aggression against his country and bloody violence in Israel. “Terror has opened too many fronts against humanity: the war against Ukraine, the war in the Middle East and the terrible destabilization in Africa,” Zelensky said in his evening video message broadcast from Kiev on Sunday. “And next week we will work with our partners to ensure world unity in the fight against terror,” Zelensky said.
«Several international events are planned. As always, the Ukrainian position will stand for unity and joint action.” Zelensky did not provide specific dates, but NATO defense ministers will meet in Brussels this Wednesday and Thursday. The meeting will also discuss continued military support to Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.
Ukraine hopes that the West will not give up its aid to the country attacked by Russia. Lately there have been discussions about aid in the US, but also in other countries. Moreover, much of international solidarity is currently focused on Israel.
Ukraine expresses solidarity with Israel and confirms the deaths there
Zelenskyj also expressed solidarity during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and emphasized the country’s right to self-defense. The president, who himself has Jewish roots, also confirmed the deaths of two Ukrainian citizens in Israel in the Hamas attacks. Ukrainian soldiers released a video supporting Israeli soldiers.
In view of the situation at home, Zelensky once again praised Ukraine’s defenders. “And today, tonight I want to thank all our people who save lives, who do everything so that terror loses,” he said. Ukrainian authorities again accused the Russian attackers on Sunday of mass terror against the civilian population. Several people were killed or injured by Russian shelling.
With Western military aid, Ukraine has been waging a defensive battle against Russian attacks for almost twenty months. Kiev’s armed forces want to liberate Russian-occupied parts of the Kherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Donetsk regions in their counter-offensive that has been going on for months. The country also wants to retake the Black Sea peninsula, Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
