Hadrian’s Wall was also damaged during the illegal felling of the famous “Robin Hood” tree in northern England. The British news agency PA reported this on Thursday, citing the historic preservation organization Historic England. A preliminary investigation found that the ruins of the ancient Roman rampart had suffered “some damage,” the report said. Once the site is safe, a more detailed archaeological investigation will be carried out.
Two men were temporarily arrested
The plane tree, which stood between two hills next to the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, was a popular photo subject. He gained worldwide fame through a scene in the 1991 film “Robin Hood – King of Thieves” with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. Hadrian’s Wall was once built on behalf of Emperor Hadrian to protect the province of Great Britain against invasions from the north .
The centuries-old tree was felled last week by unknown people. Photos showed that the trunk had fallen over the remains of the wall and had partially rested on it. A 16-year-old and a man aged between 60 and 70 have been arrested in connection with the case. They were later released on bail. (t-online, dpa)
