Thirteen dead in Russian plane crash, images of impact surfaced

At least 13 people were killed when a Russian fighter jet crashed in the Russian city of Yeisk yesterday. Authorities say three children are among them. Nineteen people were injured. According to the Russians, one of the engines failed.

The plane, a Sukhoi Su-34 fighter jet, crashed into a nine-story apartment building. According to the Russians, the plane was on a training mission, but this cannot be independently verified. Images of the impact show the fighter jet caught fire just before impact.

After the crash, a huge fireball went off, hitting several floors of the apartment building. The devastation after the impact is great: a large part of the residential building has been destroyed, the remains of the fighter plane lie on the ground in front of the building. A tree and a car also burned out.

The two occupants of the Sukhoi were able to get to safety. At least 10 bodies were recovered from the rubble, Russians say.

The Sukhoi Su-34 is heavily used by the Russian Army during the war in Ukraine. The large Yejsk airbase is not far from Ukraine.
