Following the Venice bus crash that left at least 21 dead, significant safety deficiencies around the accident site became public in Italy. The guardrail at the spot where the vehicle fell from a bridge did not meet safety standards.
This was said by the municipal councilor for transport in the lagoon city, Renato Boraso, in several interviews published on Thursday. That is why there have been plans for a renovation since 2016, but work only started in September.
The Italian newspaper “La Stampa” wrote about a “scandal” regarding the securing of the bridge. This caused a hole of one and a half meters in the guardrail at the scene of the accident. The metal railing behind this hole could not withstand the impact of the bus.
According to previous findings, the electric bus carrying tourists returning from an excursion in Venice’s old town scraped the guardrail for several meters before reaching the hole and falling.
