More than sixty people were killed in a drone attack on the military academy in Homs, Syria.

More than 78 people were killed in a drone strike on a military academy in central Syria on Thursday, activists said. There were also about 140 injured. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attack on the academy in the city of Homs took place as officers were being appointed there.

The number of casualties could continue to rise as some of the injured are in critical condition. The British-based pro-opposition Observatory for Human Rights relies on a wide network of informants. Your information often cannot be independently verified.

Drones are said to be loaded with explosives

The Syrian army blamed “terrorist organizations” for the attack, which killed soldiers and “at least nine civilians.”

Initially, no one claimed responsibility for the attack. The Syrian Observatory suspected that it could be an attack by the militant Islamic militia Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) or the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).

The military said the attack was carried out by “drones loaded with explosives” immediately after the end of the officers’ graduation ceremony. Army leadership condemned the “cowardly” attack and announced a “full response.”

Syria has been in a civil war since 2011 after President Bashar al-Assad (58) suppressed peaceful demonstrations against his government. Since then, more than 500,000 people have died and half the population has fled. (AFP/SDA)
