After the historic resignation of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy (58), a search is underway for a successor. The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives ranks third among states, behind the President and his Vice President.
There may not be elections until the middle of next week at the earliest. It’s unclear who can move forward. Trump loyalist and lawmaker Jim Jordan (59) from the state of Ohio offered to be his successor on Wednesday. But as American media report, former American President Donald Trump (77) could also consider running for office.
The Republican published an accompanying photo montage on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday. He can be seen holding the chairman’s gavel in his hand. On his head he wears a baseball cap with his campaign motto: ‘Make America Great Again’.
Supporters begged Trump to flee
On Wednesday morning, the US president also told NBC News: “A lot of people have called me about the speaker.” He would concentrate on the presidential elections. But the Republican continues: “All I can say is that we will do whatever is best for the country and other Republican parties and people.”
NBC News also reports that Trump’s name was spread by his supporters after McCarthy’s impeachment. A Trump adviser even told the online portal that Republican members of the House of Representatives had asked Trump to become interim speaker. “Members are looking to talk to the president about leadership as the House works on a long-term solution,” the aide said in an email.
Trump is not an official member of Congress. But under US law, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. The Constitution does not explicitly state that the Speaker must sit in the House of Representatives – although this has always been the case.
“His path to 218 votes is unlikely”
It is still unclear whether the Republican will actually hold out for this position. What his chances would be is also anyone’s guess. Trump would need at least 218 votes to secure the post. A Republican activist involved in the speaker’s election told the online portal: “His path to 218 votes is unlikely, if not impossible.”
In addition, Republican House rules prohibit handing a leadership role to someone accused of a crime. Trump is currently involved in several lawsuits. (madam/AFP)
