These are the consequences of Kevin McCarthy’s historic resignation: the death blow for Ukraine, new hope for Trump

American democracy is up to its knees in mud – precisely because of those American Republican representatives who loudly proclaim that they want to “drain the swamp in Washington”. The House of Representatives, the American National Council, no longer has a speaker. Radical representatives of his own party ousted Republican Kevin McCarthy (58) on Tuesday because he had been too accommodating to the Democrats in the budget negotiations. A first in America’s 247-year history.

A House of Representatives without a speaker runs just as smoothly as a wedding without chatter – namely, none at all. American democracy is in a coma. For the time being, there are no new laws, no decisions. If this only affected the Americans themselves, you could follow the political drama in a relaxed way. But the chaos in Washington also has direct consequences for us in Europe.

Coma has three dangerous consequences:

1

The most powerful army in the world on the ground

The impasse in the House of Representatives comes at a time when America must decide its budget. The emergency budget approved last week is only valid until November 17. Then the most powerful country in the world is once again threatened with insolvency. This means, among other things, no more wages for soldiers and border guards. The protective function of international trade routes, the operation of the approximately 750 army bases and the maintenance of nuclear preparedness forces are in limbo.

Death knell for Ukraine

US President Joe Biden (80) needs parliamentary approval for new aid to Ukraine. If Kiev remains in a coma, it will have to give up its most generous donor by far. That would amount to a premature defeat in the war against Russia. Washington has provided Ukraine with $42 billion in direct military aid since the war broke out – more than all other countries combined.

3

Power vacuum in the White House

The Speaker of the House of Representatives is number two in line to the American throne, just behind the Vice President. If the terrible scenario were to occur that both Joe Biden and his deputy Kamala Harris (58) suddenly failed, the US would be leaderless. The resulting chaos would create extreme uncertainty worldwide.

No decision will be made about Kevin McCarthy’s successor for at least another week. As a reminder, it took 15 rounds of voting before divided U.S. lawmakers could agree on McCarthy nine months ago. There are no signs that things will go faster next time.

There is already a lot of talk in Washington about one scenario: several MPs involve Donald Trump (77) as the next speaker. That could be possible, the speaker does not have to be a member of the House of Representatives himself. The job has no legal immunity. But plenty of power and screen presence.
