For the first time, a woman is the Chief Justice of England and Wales. Sue Carr was sworn in as the 98th Chief Justice in London on Monday. Scores of judges and lawyers gathered in the personal courtroom of the Royal Courts of Justice to witness the historic moment, the BBC reported on Monday. The 59-year-old took over from Ian Burnett (65), who retired after six years. She is the first woman in the firm’s nearly 800-year history. Carr promised “energy, enthusiasm and positivity.”
A total of 400 legal tasks are associated with the office. Lady Carr will now preside over some of the country’s most important cases, but will also oversee the training and mentoring of judges. Carr was officially built by order of King Charles III. appointed on the advice of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Justice Secretary Alex Chalk. The personnel data are actually based on advice from an independent panel of experts. In Northern Ireland, which has an independent judicial system, a woman was appointed chief justice in 2021.
Carr most recently worked at the Court of Appeal. There she decided that a prison sentence against two environmental activists, including a German, was legal. The men had occupied a major motorway bridge east of London for a long time, causing long traffic jams. In a much-discussed interview in June, Carr spoke out in favor of girls-only education and boys-only education. (sda/dpa)
