At least nine people were killed when a church roof collapsed in northeastern Mexico. Another 40 people were injured when the roof of the Santa Cruz Church in the city of Ciudad Madero collapsed, security authorities in Tamaulipas state said on Sunday (local time).

According to media reports, numerous people were celebrating a baptism in the church at the time of the accident. Television showed security forces, worshipers and residents trying to rescue survivors from the rubble. Authorities said the rescue operation involved soldiers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

“We are experiencing a very difficult day. Efforts are currently underway to recover survivors buried under the rubble,” Tampico Bishop José Armando Álvarez Cano said in a video message. “We pray for them.” (SDA)
