In the battle for funding, the US federal government is once again threatened with closure – with serious consequences for the fighting on the frontline in Ukraine. A few hours before the closing deadline, the House of Representatives approved a 45-day emergency solution. The bill will now be submitted to the Senate for consideration. Explosive: Ukraine will receive no further American aid for the next month and a half.

Despite the objections of some conservatives, the emergency law does not provide any new money or support for Ukraine – for example, no training for F-16 fighter pilots. This while the belligerent country needs all possible resources to make progress with the ongoing counter-offensive against the Russian defense lines.

“Putin is celebrating”

The Biden administration warned that suspending aid to Ukraine risked serious consequences for the war. A shutdown would also have enormous consequences for the entire United States, from air traffic to clean drinking water. Many government operations would come to a standstill. Military operations in Ukraine are also in danger of coming to a standstill.

Representative activates fire alarm in Congress amid shutdown drama

Strange incident during the budget dispute in Congress: Democratic Representative Jamaal Bowman reportedly set off the fire alarm in a US Congressional building. “Congressman Bowman was unaware that he was setting off a building alarm as he rushed to participate in an emergency vote,” US media quoted a Democrat spokeswoman as saying on Saturday.

Republicans responded angrily to the incident, accusing Bowman of trying to delay the vote on the interim budget in the House of Representatives by pulling the fire alarm. This is intended to prevent a so-called shutdown. Democrats had previously complained that they did not have enough time to read the text.

“This cannot go unpunished. “This is a shame,” said House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.

A single Democrat voted against the stopgap measure due to the lack of aid to Ukraine. Representative Mike Quigley (64) of Illinois criticized the decision package, which does not provide Ukraine with any new aid. “Putin is celebrating,” Quigley told CNN. The Reagan Doctrine in the Republican Party is “dead.”

The Reagan Doctrine during the Cold War aimed to weaken and ultimately overthrow the governments of pro-Soviet states by supporting anti-communist forces. “We have 45 days to fix the problem,” Quigley said angrily. But he “doesn’t see how the dynamics will change in 45 days.”

The White House warns

John Kirby, 60, communications director of the National Security Council, had previously tried to hold US lawmakers accountable. The senior White House official said cutting off US funds to Ukraine at a critical time would impact Kiev’s military operations.

Kirby warned that Kiev risked not having the necessary resources for the counter-offensive at a key time.

The US is Ukraine’s main supporter. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German research institute, the Biden administration and the US Congress have provided more than $75 billion in aid to Ukraine since the start of the war, including humanitarian, financial and military support.
