Compared to August, the interest rate fell by 0.1 percentage point to 5.7 percent. Compared to September 2022, unemployment has increased by 0.3 points. For the September statistics, the Federal Agency used data available until September 12.
“The beginning of the autumn revival is relatively small this year,” said Daniel Terzenbach, board member of the Federal Labor Office. “Unemployment and underemployment are declining, but less than normal in September.” In principle, the German labor market is still stable, says Terzenbach.
The demand for labor in Germany remains very high and there is a shortage of personnel in many places. The Federal Agency reported the number of vacancies in September at 761,000. However, demand is also declining slightly. A year ago, the number of reported vacancies was 113,000 higher.
Nevertheless, with 45.99 million people in August, there were 347,000 more people employed than a year ago. Figures for September are not yet available for employment.
The development of short-time working does not currently provide clear information about the situation in companies. The most recent reliable data from July shows that the BA has paid short-time work benefits to 124,000 people.
In June there were 158,000 and in May 156,000. Companies registered for an additional 50,000 short-time workers between September 1 and 23. It is not clear whether this was actually used. (SDA)
