Kevin Costner once stood under the plane tree as Robin Hood. Now the most photographed tree in England has been illegally felled.
The tree was in a dramatic depression – the so-called Sycamore Gap. Due to its picturesque location, the tree was popular as a photo motif. The tree became famous in the Hollywood film “Robin Hood – King of Thieves” (1991).
The ‘Sycamore Gap Tree’, also called the ‘Robin Hood Tree’, is so famous that there is even an article about it on Wikipedia. The consternation in the region is enormous. Police spoke of “shock, sadness and anger” caused by the tree’s destruction.
The tree was an important and distinctive part of the landscape for about 200 years, nature conservation organization National Trust, which manages the Northumberland National Park, writes about X. The organization has reason to believe that the tree was felled with a chainsaw.
