X is now mainly concerned with cutting jobs in the team due to false information about elections. Why repair professionals have a bone to pick with Apple

The online platform X drastically reduces the number of employees who have to take action against the spread of false information about elections. X owner Elon Musk partially confirmed a message from the online medium ‘The Information’ on Thursday.

According to the report, the short messaging service, formerly known as Twitter, is cutting half of the jobs in this sector. “Oh, you mean the ‘Election Integrity’ team that undermined the integrity of the election?” the high-tech billionaire wrote on X. “Yes, they’re gone.”

Critics accuse the tech billionaire of sharply scaling back content moderation and cracking down on hate speech and misinformation since taking over Twitter last year. This accusation has been confirmed by several independent studies.

Critical time

This move comes at a critical time: next year there will be more than fifty major elections worldwide, including the European elections in June and the US congressional and presidential elections in November 2024.

Musk’s appointed X boss, Linda Yaccarino, assured this week that the online platform was expanding its election team. “There is a robust and growing team at X committed to election integrity,” she said at a conference.

An evaluation by the European Commission recently concluded that X of the major online platforms contains the largest share of false information. Musk withdrew from an agreement on how to deal with disinformation between the EU and major online services. Putin’s Russia, which is waging a criminal war of aggression against Ukraine, uses X extensively to spread propaganda and disinformation.
