The Swissmedic medicines authority has approved a modified corona vaccine from Moderna. The vaccine is said to work better than its predecessors against the currently circulating corona variants ‘Eris’ and ‘Pirola’.

Watson reported:

Testing of the new vaccine XBB.1.5 was carried out as part of an internationally harmonized regulatory process to simplify the approval of new Covid-19 vaccines, Swissmedic announced on Thursday. This method was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and has been used for decades for the annual approval of modified flu vaccines.

Moderna is pleased with the approval, the pharmaceutical company wrote in a statement. The approval is important given the increasing number of cases at the start of the autumn/winter period, said Dan Staner, head of Moderna Switzerland.

According to Moderna, the modified vaccine has already been approved by the US, Canada, the European Union, Britain, Israel and Taiwan.
