Chris Christie addressed Trump directly during the debate. “I know you’re watching.”

Chris Christie (61) is not known as a big Trump friend. Among Republican candidates for president, he is considered one of the few to directly attack Donald Trump (77). At the second debate in Simi Valley, he again took the opportunity to criticize the absent former president for his non-participation.

He looked straight into the camera and said, “Donald, I know you’re watching. “You can’t help it,” Christie said. And he accused him of cowardice: “You are afraid to stand on this stage and defend your record.”

Trump – who is known for berating his opponents – was paid back in hard cash. Christie scoffed: “If you keep this up, no one here will call you Donald Trump anymore, they’ll call you Donald Duck.”

Also DeSantis against Trump

Only shortly afterwards did Ron DeSantis (45), who can never really bring himself to attack the party leader directly, also shoot at Trump.

First, he criticized US President Joe Biden (80) for being ‘inactive’ and not leading the country. “And you know who else is inactive? Donald Trump. He should be on this stage tonight,” DeSantis said. “He owes it to you to defend his balance sheet, which has increased his debt by $7.8 trillion. That created the conditions for the inflation we have now.”

Democratic US President Joe Biden (80) gratefully accepted Ron DeSantis’ criticism and shared the video on X, formerly Twitter, with the reference: “Couldn’t ace more!”

Biden in criticism

But of course the Republican candidates attacked Biden even more strongly than Trump. They accused him of price increases and illegal immigration, among other things.

Trump, who polls show has a large lead in favor of Republican voters, instead sought support for striking auto workers in Michigan. (neo)
