Are there attacks on Russian weapons factories?
In its defense against the Russian invasion, Ukraine is increasingly turning to its opponent’s arms industry. President Volodymyr Zelensky said this after listening with his leadership to a report on the situation in the Russian military-industrial complex. “We can clearly see where pressure on Russia needs to be increased to prevent its terrorist capabilities from growing,” he said. He gave no details.
Foreign sanctions on Russia’s defense industry are not enough, Zelensky said in his video address on Tuesday evening. “There will be more Ukrainian measures against the terrorist state,” he threatened. “As long as Russian aggression continues, Russia will have to feel its losses.”
Moscow has increased weapons production because of the war of aggression against Ukraine. Kiev is concerned because Russian industry can still obtain electronic components from other countries despite the sanctions. Over the course of the war, there were repeated mysterious fires at Russian factories and facilities related to the defense industry – some of them inland, far from the Ukrainian border.
The biggest problem is the ammunition
According to Zelensky, the nearest leadership circle in Kiev was also engaged in the supply of artillery ammunition. “This is a problem we deal with every day,” he says. Deliveries from previous partner countries are important. At the same time, Ukraine is looking for new sources. “And we are gradually increasing the volume of our Ukrainian production.”
Against the traditionally strong Russian artillery, Ukraine has achieved superiority in firepower on some fronts with the help of new weapons from Western countries. There is always a shortage of ammunition.
Kiev’s military chief bids farewell to American colleagues
The supply of ammunition and other armaments was also the subject of the farewell conversation between Ukrainian commander-in-chief Valeriy Zalushnyj and his departing American colleague Mark Milley. “Our soldiers did not lose any position,” Saluzhnyj reported. “In some places we continue to advance despite fierce resistance from the enemy.” The Ukrainian thanked Milley for his support and cooperation. According to reports, Milley’s future successor at the head of the US armed forces, General Charles Brown, also took part in the conversation.
Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure
At least seven villages in the Russian border region of Kursk were cut off from the electricity grid on Tuesday after a Ukrainian drone attack. A drone dropped an explosive on a substation in the village of Snagost, about 15 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The governor of the region, Roman Starovoyt, wrote this on Telegram. So no one was injured.
The Ukrainian secret service SBU confirmed the drone attack to local media. “The Russians should be aware that they will face a harsh response if they continue to attack Ukrainian energy facilities,” one official said.
Last winter, Moscow tried to bring Ukraine to its knees by systematically bombing its energy system. The attacked country had great difficulty maintaining the supply of electricity, heating, gas and water to its population. In September this year, the Russians again began attacking the Ukrainian energy structure.
Seven ships used the Ukrainian corridor in the Black Sea
Seven ships have left Ukraine’s Black Sea ports since mid-August, despite an alleged Russian naval blockade. Five of them have been held there since the start of the war in February 2022, Ukrainian navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk said in Odessa. Two more cargo ships came to Ukraine, loaded grain and left again.
In July, Russia dropped security guarantees for ships picking up grain from three ports on Ukraine’s Black Sea. Moscow threatened to consider all ships bound for Ukraine as hostile. Ukraine, in turn, has designated a maritime corridor for cargo ships. There is a residual risk from Russian missiles and aircraft, Pletenchuk said. However, Russian naval ships no longer dared to come near the shipping route for fear of being hit.
That will be important on Wednesday
The Russian Defense Ministry has released a video showing the suspected dead fleet chief Viktor Sokolov alive. Expert analyzes are expected because the images of a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu are not entirely clear. Admiral Sokolov is said to have been killed last week in a Ukrainian attack on the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol.
Representatives of the Baltic republics, as well as other NATO states and Ukraine, are participating in the security conference in Tallinn (“Annual Baltic Conference on Defense/ABCD”). Minister Pistorius’ speech there also concludes his three-day visit to Latvia and Estonia. (sda/dpa)
