Activists from both sides of the ‘Last Generation’ stormed into the streets of the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, June 17. They tried to block the athletes’ path with buckets and posters and spilled orange paint on the asphalt. However, security forces immediately intervened and ended the protest before it had even started.

A police spokeswoman said that the climate stickers will soon receive a fine of 2,000 euros. Further criminal consequences are also possible. In total, the ‘Last Generation’ must pay 16,000 euros for the color attack, in which eight activists took part.

Lawyer and CDU politician Burkard Dregger (59) told the ‘BZ’ that there was no reason to ask the taxpayer for payment. “It’s property damage. The perpetrator must pay and that must be done with all due care.”

Is the “Last Generation” criminal?

For some, the current penalties are still too lenient. The environmental activists continued on Monday where they left off on Sunday and took to the streets in many places in Berlin.

For Benjamin Jedro, spokesman for the police union, the ‘Last Generation’ is ‘a criminal organization’. The activists provided a lot of work for the state institutions. The group “takes all possible legal remedies, objects, simply does not pay and drags out the proceedings.” His colleagues could hardly keep up with the issuing of fines.

Yet he believes: “In the long term, the ‘Last Generation’ will no longer be able to cope with the resulting fines and legal costs and, if they are convicted, they will hardly have any people left to stay anywhere.”
