The International Energy Agency gives hope: the energy transition should still be possible taking into account the 1.5 degree target.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global climate goals remain within reach thanks to the record growth of solar energy and electromobility. The path to the 1.5 degree target “has become narrower in the past two years, but clean energy technologies keep it open,” explains IEA boss Fatih Birol (65). However, according to an updated report from the IEA, the energy transition requires avoiding new long-term fossil fuel developments.

In addition, all countries must significantly accelerate their efforts to reach the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, the International Energy Agency said. She called on richer countries to bring forward the target to 2045. China should bring forward the target to 2050. This would advance the target by five years for most industrialized countries and by ten years for China.

Hesitated for too long

The world has hesitated for too long ‘to avoid tough decisions’, the IEA said. Combined clean energy technologies are expected to deliver one-third of the emissions reductions needed by 2030, she said.

The Paris Climate Agreement, concluded in 2015, aims to limit global warming to well below two degrees compared to the pre-industrial era, but if possible to 1.5 degrees. However, according to the UN, with current policies the climate is heading towards plus 2.8 degrees by the end of the century. The climate has already warmed by almost 1.2 degrees Celsius since the mid-19th century, increasing the intensity, frequency and duration of heat waves, droughts and storms. (AFP)
