Spanish police have arrested a priest in the south of the country for allegedly drugging and sexually abusing several women. The 34-year-old, who also filmed the alleged acts, was arrested in Vélez-Málaga, Andalusia, about 30 kilometers east of Málaga.
The police announced this on Monday. Five victims have been identified so far from the seized videos. However, it cannot be ruled out that more damaged women will be found in the course of the research. The investigating judge has ordered pre-trial detention.
The women identified in the videos and who have since been contacted did not realize they had been victims of an alleged sexual crime. According to the police report, they did not know about the existence of the videos.
The investigation was launched in August when a former roommate of the suspect discovered videos and photos on a hard drive showing the crimes the man was accused of. She immediately alerted the authorities.
According to police, all alleged victims belong to the priest’s circle of friends and, according to current findings, were abused by the man during group trips to different regions in Spain. The Episcopal Diocese of Malaga, which is responsible for the priest, expressed its pain in a statement. They said they were cooperating with the judiciary in this case. (sda/dpa)
