Eight bodies have been discovered in a national park in Mexico near the tourist-popular city of Acapulco, according to a non-governmental organization. They have been removed from the mountains, the organization said on Friday.
The dead were found between Monday and Thursday in El Veladero National Park, a large nature reserve overlooking Acapulco Bay on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Three weeks earlier, seven people disappeared in Acapulco. However, so far authorities have not established a link between the disappearance and the discovery of the body in the nature reserve.
Acapulco is the most populous city in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Criminal groups are out for mischief in Guerrero; they are constantly fighting among themselves to expand their gang territory. According to authorities, 4,171 people are currently missing in the state.
In the absence of results from the authorities, the families of the disappeared often search for their relatives in the countryside with shovels and hoes. It is often non-governmental organizations that draw the authorities’ attention to mass graves thanks to anonymous tips.
