Two people have died in serious fires on the Italian island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. A man died during the evacuation of his home in Trappeto, near the island capital Palermo, police announced on Saturday. Near the town of Cefalù, a 42-year-old woman died while trying to free horses from a burning stable.

More than 700 holidaymakers were taken to safety from a hotel, but were able to return that night, according to regional authorities.

The fires were promoted by high temperatures of over 35 degrees and drought, but also by the hot Scirocco wind from Africa, which repeatedly causes problems in Sicily. In total, more than 50 fire sources were counted. The northern part of Italy’s largest island was particularly affected. A building on a university campus in Palermo had to be evacuated. Several schools and part of the island’s highway were closed. The rescuers were constantly using fire-fighting aircraft.
