A 23-year-old woman from Berlin has been ordered to appear in court for seriously assaulting those under her protection. The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office announced this on Thursday. She is said to have brutally abused her baby.
The baby was only a month old when the abuse began. The woman is said to have caused life-threatening injuries to her child due to blunt force and violent shaking.
In 2021, she developed an “enormous dislike” for her one-month-old daughter and therefore severely abused her between January and April, it is said. Prosecutors say the baby suffered brain injuries and a fractured skull.
Child returned to parents after emergency surgery
On April 30, 2021, the violence reached its peak: doctors were only able to save the child’s life through emergency surgery. Nevertheless, the girl initially returned to her parents – until serious accusations were made. As a spokeswoman for the Public Prosecution Service said, the hospital had ordered a report into the injuries, which exposed the abuse.
After this discovery, the Youth Care Office removed the child from the family in May 2021. It is still unclear whether the daughter will suffer permanent damage.
Charges were also filed against the 28-year-old father. According to the Public Prosecution Service, he did not stop his partner at the time and underestimated the dangers of her actions. He will soon have to appear in court for negligence causing bodily harm. (gs)
