The Polish head of government made devastating statements for Ukraine on Wednesday evening in an interview with the Polsat broadcaster: “We are no longer transferring weapons to Ukraine because we are equipping ourselves with the most modern weapons,” said Mateusz Morawiecki.
Morawiecki further said that Poland had greatly increased its orders for military equipment. “If you don’t want to defend yourself, you must have something to defend yourself with – we adhere to this rule.” The armed forces must be modernized so that Poland will have one of the strongest land armies in Europe, Morawiecki said.
“We will no longer transfer weapons”
On X, the Chancellery repeated the Prime Minister’s statement. “Ukraine is defending itself against the brutal Russian attack and I understand this situation, but as I said: we will protect our country. We will no longer transfer weapons to Ukraine, as we now arm Poland.”
Poland’s announcement is bad news for Ukraine, military expert Carlo Masala, professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, told ‘Bild’: ‘It creates a catastrophic appearance to the outside world when one of Ukraine’s main supporting states announces this .’
According to the expert, this could make Putin’s strategy work. He is playing for time and waiting for other states’ support for Ukraine to erode. Masala suspects that the reason for Poland’s withdrawal is the disturbed Polish-Ukrainian relationship due to grain exports to the EU. However, Poland is in the middle of an election campaign.
Conflict over ban on grain imports
Since the start of the war, Poland has been one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters and arms suppliers. Morawiecki’s statement comes just a short time after the conflict flared up over Poland’s ban on the import of Ukrainian grain. In recent days the problems had come to a head. The war has blocked the classic export route for Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea. The EU has imposed trade restrictions on land transport against Ukraine to protect local farmers.
Ukraine had filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against three EU countries – including Poland – over their ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products. After Zelensky’s angry speech at the UN, Poland summoned the Ukrainian ambassador.
However, at another point in the interview, Morawiecki emphasized that the government in Warsaw would in no way endanger Ukraine’s security. “Our hub in Rzeszow will continue to play the same role as before and in the future, in accordance with the Americans and NATO,” he assured. Much of Western military aid to Ukraine in its defensive battle against aggressor Russia passes through the city of Rzeszow in southeastern Poland. (neo/SDA)
