The health ministry in the coastal strip, which is controlled by the ruling Islamist Hamas, said the body of a 25-year-old had been taken to a hospital. According to Palestinian media reports, he was killed by gunfire. Eleven other people were injured, the ministry said. The Israeli military said it is investigating the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, dozens of young men approached the border fence and unrest broke out. Recently there have been more such clashes with Israeli soldiers on the Gaza border. At least five Palestinians were killed last Wednesday during similar protests, apparently when their own explosives detonated.

As unrest has flared up again, Israel has closed the border to thousands of Palestinian workers. More than two million people live in very poor conditions in the Gaza Strip. Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, the US and Israel, seized power by force in 2007. Israel subsequently tightened the blockade of the coastal area, which Egypt supported.
