Embarrassing mistake: the CDU really believes that this dome in Germany is a war-weary world? Speeches on Ukraine at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday

June 26, 2023, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rostock: Friedrich Merz, chairman of the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag, answers at a press conference during the meeting of the faction leaders of the CDU and CSU...

The CDU proudly presented the new color of its logo on Tuesday. In the future it should be turquoise. Or – more precisely – ‘Cadenabbia’. The tone is somewhat reminiscent of the color that the conservative ÖVP once used in Austria under Sebastian Kurz. And: there is also a similarity with the AfD. At least that is what critics accused the party of. However, the CDU firmly rejected the idea that it wanted to express any connection with the parties mentioned.

As CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann put it when presenting the new paint: the color should stand for ‘vitality, confidence and freedom’. In any case, the party received many reactions after the presentation, both negative and positive.

Now there is another hail of ridicule and malice. But this time it is due to a different error.

Because: The turquoise paint is not only reflected in the new logo, where the party letters are now black instead of red. The video released on Tuesday is also in the new festive color ‘Cadenabbia’. The CDU made an embarrassing mix-up there.

New CDU image film with embarrassing mix-up

On Tuesday, the party posted the new video on its social media channels. For example, the X account (formerly Twitter) called “CDU Germany” uses a strong headline: “Our strong signal. For innovation. For cohesion. For the CDU,” it says. The 67-second video is accompanied by heroic music. It shows many different fragments and images, all in a turquoise frame. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel, among others, can be seen. Photos of mountains, black and white photos from Germany – all in line with the party’s conservative orientation.

And: After 20 seconds the Reichstag appears on the screen. At least that’s what they wanted to portray in the clip. However, the building is not the seat of the German Bundestag, as some users were quick to point out on social media.

Instead, Georgia’s presidential palace was lost in the CDU footage.

The mixing did not go unnoticed for long. Shortly after the film’s release, users responded to the faux pas. So someone writes:

«It’s true: the CDU’s new visual film does not show the Reichstag, but rather the presidential palace of Georgia. And NONE of them noticed. (…) I would like to know if an AI was involved!”

The person adds a laughing emoji.

Another user gives the makers of the visual film advice for the future: “You should reconsider your video and use the Reichstag Berlin instead of the presidential palace shown in Tbilisi (photo).” And Bundestag member Konstantin von Notz (Alliance 90/Greens) writes:

“There is a certain logic that those who believe this is the Reichstag believe that Berlin and Kreuzberg are not Germany.”

A user probably wants to be on the safe side and also places other buildings with domes in front of the CDU. “To be sure, I would like to point out that these buildings are not the Bundestag, even though they have a dome,” he writes in an ironic tone and adds photos of, for example, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. or the Taj Mahal in India.

But how could this confusion happen in the first place? Unclear. Apparently no one noticed when checking the footage that the Reichstag was not even visible here. But some users have a completely different theory about this…

For example, you place photos of CDU leader Friedrich Merz in front of the computer screen.
