Not only the fifteen permanent members of the council – as here in August – participate in an open debate in the UN Security Council. Other UN member states have also been invited.

Today, Wednesday, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting in New York on “maintaining peace and security in Ukraine.” This could lead to an explosive confrontation: it is expected that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky (45) and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (73) will also participate in the meeting. This was reported by the Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

Not only the fifteen members of the Security Council will participate in the meeting in open debate form, but also other UN countries. Theoretically, it would even be possible that American President Joe Biden (80) would also make a surprise appearance. He will receive Selenski at the White House on Thursday.

According to Russian reports, Zelensky is expected to appear on an official mission to the UN Security Council, the most powerful UN body, for the first time since the start of the war. The debate starts at 11am (5pm CEST). This is expected to last until late afternoon local time. Zelensky gave a speech to the council on Tuesday.

No special safety measures

The delegation representing Russia at the UN General Assembly from September 19 to 26 is led by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. Ria Novosti reported on Sunday that Lavrov and Zelensky took part in the meeting. The news agency reconfirmed the report late on Tuesday.

According to the UN, no special security measures will be taken for the event. Zelensky and Lavrov should also explain why they currently reject peace talks. (kes)
