The workers were heading to the Venetia mine, one of the country’s largest diamond mines, a representative of the transport authority in northern Limpopo province said on Sunday.
Accordingly, the accident occurred in the afternoon (local time) about 25 kilometers from the diamond mine in the town of Musican, near the border with Zimbabwe. The cause of the accident was initially unclear.
The Venetia mine has been operated by De Beers for more than 30 years and employs more than 4,300 people. It accounts for more than 40 percent of the country’s annual diamond production.
The Limpopo mine was the largest open-pit mine in South Africa before De Beers invested $2 billion and switched to underground mining in July to obtain more diamonds.
South Africa has one of the best developed road networks on the continent, but also has one of the worst road safety records. (SDA)
