Former US President Donald Trump remains convinced that he can end the war in Ukraine almost alone.

He does not show the slightest hint of overestimation of himself. While NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg (64) just warned that “we must prepare for a long war in Ukraine”, former US President Donald Trump (77) sees himself as a savior: he will be Vladimir Putin (70) and Volodimir to take. Zelensky (45) at the table and reached a peace agreement.

Trump has repeatedly boasted that he would end the war in Ukraine within days if he wins the 2024 US presidential election and returns to the White House. In an interview with the American broadcaster NBC broadcast on Sunday, Trump was also convinced that as American president he could end the war quickly and through negotiations.

Trump said he could not explain in detail how he would try to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. “If I tell you exactly, I will lose all my negotiating points,” Trump said. “But I would say certain things to Putin,” Trump said. “I would say certain things to Zelensky.” He gets along well with both the Russian and Ukrainian presidents: “I get along well with both.”

Greetings to Putin

As US president, it was Trump who twice met internationally maligned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (39), interrupting decades of US sanctions policy against North Korea. The Korean crisis seemed to have been temporarily averted under Trump. Trump has no fear of contact – which he immediately demonstrated on Sunday with a greeting to Putin.

In the NBC interview, Trump sent a direct greeting to Putin. Trump expressed delight over a comment the Kremlin chief made on Tuesday when Putin said: “We hear that Mr. Trump says he will resolve all burning issues in a few days, including the Ukraine crisis. We can’t help but be happy with it.”

Trump to NBC: ‘Well, I like that he said that. Because that means what I say is right. I would put him in a room. I would get Zelensky in a room. Then I would bring them together. And I would get a deal done. I would negotiate a deal.” But, Trump says, “It would have been a lot easier before it started.”

Bloodshed could have been prevented, Trump said

Asked whether he would support a deal that would allow Putin to retain Ukrainian territory, Trump responded categorically: “No, no, no, no.” He “would make a fair deal for everyone. No, I would do it honestly.”

Trump was convinced that an escalation with Russia could have been prevented. This would be the case if Kiev had agreed to give up parts of its territory.

Keeping the peace, Trump said, would have been possible with the “loss of smaller areas that, let’s face it, Russia has already annexed.”

Probably wouldn’t forgive himself

Trump is under enormous legal pressure in the US. This year, four federal criminal cases were opened against the former US president.

Theoretically, Trump could carry out his official duties as elected US president from a prison cell. If he wins back the White House, Trump could also pardon himself on all federal charges.

Trump does not want to rule out self-pardon if he is re-elected. But that is “very unlikely,” he says. (kes)
