Several hundred contacts have also been tested for the virus, but the results are still pending, the report said. According to local television channel NDTV, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said they wanted to actively look for cases.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed people to avoid public gatherings in the affected Kozhikode district for the time being. In 2018, there was a major Nipah outbreak in the district, which killed 21 people. Nipah outbreaks have also occurred in Singapore and Malaysia.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus can be transmitted to humans through animals such as flying foxes or pigs, but also through contaminated food or directly between people. An infection can therefore remain asymptomatic, but can also lead to acute respiratory problems and life-threatening encephalitis. According to the information, an estimated 40 to 75 percent of those affected die. There is currently no medicine or vaccine against the virus.
