Diana’s Famous Sweater Auctioned for $1.1 Million ‘The Nation’s Feelings Hurt’: China Discusses Strange Clothing Law

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Princess Diana's Black Sheep Sweater is on display on his first day in New York at Sotheby's on September 7, 2023 in New York City. The sweater was original...

A red wool sweater decorated with sheep that the future Princess Diana wore shortly after announcing her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981 has been auctioned for $1.1 million.

The New York auction house Sotheby’s confirmed this to the AFP news agency on Thursday. Sotheby’s original estimate was between $50,000 and $80,000. The auction started online on August 31 and really picked up steam shortly before the end, when the price rose from $200,000 to the final price in $50,000 increments.

Diana first wore the sweater during her fiancé’s polo match in 1981. The garment features dozens of white sheep as well as a black sheep – according to Sotheby’s a sign of Diana’s relaxed and creative spirit.

A few weeks later, the sweater’s makers, Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, received a message from Buckingham Palace stating that the garment was damaged and that Diana was requesting repairs or replacement. The two made a new one, which the princess wore in 1983. However, the sheep sweater that is now being auctioned is the original. (sda/afp)
