Secretary of State Annalena Baerbock has expressed confidence that there is also support among opposition Republicans in the US Congress for long-term support for Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia. “I heard Republican voices who had a lot of questions about the support for Ukraine,” the Green politician said on Thursday after talks with Republican members of Congress in Washington. But she has also heard from many “that it is clear to them how important continued support for Ukraine is for us Europeans, and of course for Ukraine itself.”
“Because if Putin wins this war because there is no more Ukrainian support from us as Europeans, from the Americans, then that would also be a fatal signal to other dictatorships, to other autocracies in this world,” Baerbock said. This would mean “that you only have to act boldly enough for long enough to oppress your smaller neighbor. And that would definitely send the wrong signal.” Even though there are differing positions, many Republicans have made it clear “that for them, support for Ukraine is central and important because it is also support for the rules-based international order.”
Baerbock met with several Republican members of Congress in the morning (local time), including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Interviews were also scheduled with Nancy Mace (South Carolina), James Risch (Idaho), Shelley Moore Capito (West Virginia), John Barrasso (Wyoming), Roger Wicker (Mississippi), Jerry Moran (Kansas) and Eric Schmitt (Missouri) .
Before the 2024 presidential elections, Baerbock wants to get an idea of the political situation in the United States during her longer trip to the US. She has been in Texas in recent days and next week Baerbock, like Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), will participate in the UN General Assembly in New York. (sda/dpa)
