The wife of former Mexican drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán has left prison after serving just over half her sentence in the US. Emma Coronel (34) was released on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the prison authority confirmed at the request of the German news agency. That’s why she’s still on probation for four years. Authorities have not provided any information about Coronel’s whereabouts. Most recently, she was in a detention center in Long Beach, California, near Los Angeles.

The former beauty queen, who has dual American and Mexican nationality, was sentenced to 36 months in prison at the end of 2021 for her involvement in her husband’s drug empire.

She was involved in cartel activities

‘El Chapo’ led the powerful Sinaloa cartel in Mexico for about 25 years. He is now in a maximum security prison in the state of Colorado. A New York court sentenced him to life in prison plus 30 years in 2019 – Coronel was among the spectators in the courtroom at the time. In one of the largest drug trials in American history, a jury found Guzmán, now 66, guilty of all 10 charges – including participation in a criminal organization, the production and international distribution of cocaine and heroin, as well as money laundering and use of firearms.

In the 2021 trial, the prosecutor accused her of, among other things, helping her husband escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She was allegedly involved in the activities of the Sinaloa cartel from 2011 to 2017. In addition to the prison sentence, a federal judge in Washington imposed four years of probation and a fine of almost 1.5 million dollars (about 1.36 million euros). (SDA)
