EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson knitted on Wednesday during a speech by Ursula von der Leyen.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen (64) gave a speech on Wednesday. She spoke about the climate, migration and China, among other things. She also discussed the danger of artificial intelligence. At that precise moment, the screen direction turned towards the plenary session. There was the Swede Ylva Johansson (59). She is the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs – and spends her time knitting.

Was Johanssen busy with gifts? It wouldn’t be the first time. In 2020, she gave all her cabinet employees self-knitted socks. To show how much I appreciate them, I knitted them all warm socks.”

Opinions are divided

On X, formerly Twitter, opinions about the knitting campaign were divided. “Fun pastime,” writes one user. Another user claims: “Moving her hands stimulates the brain. She probably internalized more of the speech than most of the other participants.” Another user even praised Janssen: “A great example of leadership in the green transition. It is much better to do it yourself than to rely on fast fashion. Bravo.” Others even say they would do the same.

But not everyone takes it lightly. “If I behaved like this in my workplace, I would definitely lose my job,” another user complains. (Mrs)
