The death of Mohammed Hassan (†27) made headlines around the world and caused outrage. The helper climbed K2 in Pakistan with a group of mountaineers – and died at an altitude of 8,200 meters. What was especially bad was that no one helped the dying man. Ice cold, the alpinists gradually climbed over the injured Pakistanis. Lack of money drove Hassan to the mountain
The Pakistani was at an altitude of over 8,000 meters for the first time. Previously, he worked as a ‘low-altitude porter’, simply carrying other people’s equipment to base camps. Hassan did not have the appropriate equipment and experience, the report said.
The father of three received 722 francs from his employer “Lela Peak Expedition” for his equipment, but because the family comes from a very poor background, he preferred to save the money.
Despite the report, it remains unclear whether Hassan could have been saved with a coordinated rescue operation and more helpers. After all: as a result, there is a two-year ban for the employer “Lela Peak Expedition”.
No one questioned the suicide mission
In the future, attention should be paid to whether the porters have sufficient experience and the necessary equipment for the dangerous expedition. And rescue teams must also accompany the alpinists. However, these are only recommendations.
The employer continues to refuse to pay Mohammed Hassan’s wages to the victim’s family because he has not fulfilled his contract. Austrian Willi Steindl was present at the tragedy, but had previously aborted the expedition. He set up a charity for Hassan’s survivors to raise money. 160,000 euros have now been raised. (jwg)
