Luis Rubiales will finally step down as president of the Spanish Football Federation. Rubiales, who was temporarily suspended from his position by FIFA, today announced his resignation after weeks of controversy.
Rubiales caused a scandal on August 20 when the Spanish women’s national team won the World Cup title by kissing Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth during the awards ceremony. Despite global outrage, suspension by FIFA, a strike by national players and a wave of resignations among the staff of the women’s national team, the Spaniard initially stuck to his guns.
Now he has given in to the pressure: “As far as my resignation is concerned, yes, I will, yes, because I cannot continue my work,” the 46-year-old said in an interview with English television journalist Piers Morgan. FIFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against him after the Hermoso incident. Rubiales also published a letter explaining that he made this decision not to jeopardize a possible World Cup in Spain in 2030.
