This was the epicenter of the earthquake near Naples.

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale shook Naples on Thursday evening. This is stronger than the average tremors recently recorded in the region. Near the epicenter: a super volcano.

As the Italian newspaper “Corriere del Mezzogiorno” reports, the earthquake was felt throughout Naples. People flooded the streets, debris fell from houses and there were power cuts.

More than 50 hotspots

The strongest quake was reported at 7:42 p.m. The incident is sensitive because it took place near Mount Vesuvius in southern Italy. Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth. Nearby is a particularly dangerous area classified as a supervolcano: the Phlegraean Fields.

There was the epicenter. The area, which spans more than 150 square kilometers, has more than 50 eruption hot spots. About 360,000 people live on the super volcano.

The supervolcano last erupted in 1538. However, things around the Phlegraean Fields have been troubled for the past seventy years. Tens of thousands of smaller earthquakes have hit the region. This caused the coastal town of Pozzuoli to rise almost four meters. (babe)
